Enjoy the natural beauty of Illinois on a guided nature walk at Dickson Mounds Museum.

Dickson Mounds is a prominent archaeological museum within the Illinois State Museum System, offering visitors not only a chance to explore its rich history but also access to scenic walking trails. These trails offer a chance to experience the natural beauty of the Illinois prairies and forests. Join the naturalists and educators from the Illinois State Museum for a guided walk to learn about native wildlife and the ways in which people coexist with them.

Each guided walk will last approximately 40 minutes, with three sessions available to accommodate participants. In addition to exploring the trails, attendees will learn the basics of nature journaling and have the chance to practice documenting their observations.

This event is part of the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read Program, hosted by the Illinois State Museum System. The featured book for this program is “Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law” by Mary Roach, which explores themes of human-wildlife conflict, cooperation, and cohabitation. Participants can look forward to an engaging nature walk, a creative writing activity, and insightful discussions on the themes presented in “Fuzz.” As a special bonus, all attendees will receive a copy of the book as part of the event.

We thank the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and Arts Midwest for their support of this program. The NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.

El proyecto NEA Big Read es una iniciativa del National Endowment for the Arts el Fondo Nacional para las Artes de Estados Unidos) en cooperación con Arts Midwest.
